Lloyd and Rose Griffin
Life-long neighbors, Lloyd and Rose Griffin were born and raised in the Lower 9th Ward. They eventually were married and moved into their home on Tennessee Street in 1964, after Hurricane Betsy devastated the area. Although they never had children of their own, they were close to their neighbors and knew everyone. They remember the Lower 9th Ward as a “good neighborhood” and long to return home.

Robert Lynn Green Sr. has lived in the Lower 9th Ward for more than 40 years. He evacuated briefly for Hurricane Katrina, but returned to Louisiana weeks later despite tragic losses.

Sylvia Garrison and Darlene Mosley
Sylvia Garrison moved to the Lower 9th Ward in 1954 at the age of 15. The mother of six raised her daughters there. Garrison says the one thing she remembers most about the neighborhood was her neighbors. “I had a lot of friends,” said Garrsion. “It was a nice little neighborhood.”

A retired truck driver, Mr. Foots has lived in the Lower 9th Ward on Tennessee Street since 1968. He remembers it being a nice community, where all but one house was occupied. He knew most of his neighbors, as a truck driver.

Ethel J. Fletcher
Ethel J. Fletcher moved to the Lower 9th Ward with her husband, Theodore Fletcher, Sr., in 1956 where they raised their son and two daughters. “I thought my neighborhood was a good neighborhood,” said Ms. Fletcher. “I never had any trouble. My neighbors were friendly and I was friendly.”
