Local builders who have questions about green materials, design, installation, ratings systems and overall cost/benefits of green building should join Make It Right and the Louisiana Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council for a series of workshops called Green Boots at Xavier University.
You can come to one session or all of them! Sessions are taught by professionals familiar with the climate, market and regulatory challenges of building in post-Katrina New Orleans.
April 10 - Introduction to Green Building and Green Siting, Land Use and Foundations This workshop starts with the practical questions - What is green? What research do I need to do? What are the costs and benefits? How do I communicate to the trades or assure quality construction? How do I manage construction waste? What’s the story with the LEED, NAHB and other green rating systems? Instructor and LEED consultant Chip Henderson will help builders who want to go green get off to a good start.
The second part of the workshop will walk through the need to orient the house to maximize sun and shade, examines local soil conditions, the use of native landscaping to manage storm water, and the plants and trees best able to survive in New Orleans. Advice on city permitting practices and procedures and foundation strategies are also included. Instructors include Make It Right’s Landscape Architect, Tim Duggan, Civil and Environmental Engineer Frank “Chuck” Fromherz and LEED consultant Chip Henderson.
April 17 - Durable and Energy Efficient Structures
This workshop explores three ways to build green - using the tradition stick method, structural insulated panels (SIPS) or modular. Advanced (stacked) framing and storm resistant building techniques and products are also taught. Instructors include Make It Right Construction Director Jon Sader, Tony Mainsbridge of Edgefield Lumber, Civil and Environmental Engineer Frank “Chuck” Fromherz and LEED consultant Chip Henderson.
April 24 - Green and Healthy Building Materials
This workshop will explore techniques for building homes that are both energy efficient and healthy for occupants. Special emphasis will be placed on potential risks of constructing tight envelopes, methods for improving indoor air quality and restricting mold growth. Instructors include Indoor Air Quality expert, Dr. Elliott Horner, William Turner, an expert on mold and moisture control and LEED consultant Chip Henderson.
