Hurricane Katrina destroyed more than 4,000 homes in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward alone. Two years after Katrina the Lower 9thWard remained deserted and devastated, with a handful of families scattered throughout the neighborhood living in FEMA trailers. After meeting these families and hearing their determination to return home, Brad Pitt promised to help make it right by rebuilding a neighborhood of affordable, green, storm resistant homes. Make It Right grew from this promise and we broke ground on our first home in June 2008. The neighborhood we are rebuilding in is now changing almost daily. A new foundation is laid. Another family comes home. A community garden is planted. There are more kids on the playground. Make It Right is well on the way toward its initial goal and has also begun to plan projects in other communities and expand our education and training programs in green design and construction technology. |
